Etna and its territory

Etna and its territory

The area of Mount Etna is characterized by a belt of settlements that are arranged in crown at the foot of the volcano, rising on the less steep flanks. The intense and incessant seismic and volcanic activity has deeply changed the landscape. The territory has suffered on both sides a deep transformation after the eruption of 1669 and the earthquake of 1693. The appearance of the settlements as it is visible today is due to the baroque reconstruction, which has redesigned cities and countryside.
