Caltagirone

Caltagirone

From the highness of the pass between Hyblaean and Erean Mountains, the city of Caltagirone dominates the planes of Catania and Gela. The site of Caltagirone has had a strategic role in the control of a vast area of south-eastern Sicily since prehistory. Therefore, it was an important fortress during Arabic and Norman eras. Beyond being mostly renowned for the prolific artisanal creation of majolica pottery, this city is also one of the most important Unesco Baroque centres in Val di Noto.
