From Geraci to Pollina, along the scenic route of cheese and manna

This private food and history tour of the Madonie Mountains will start with a quick stop for a tasting of cheese and fresh ricotta in a little rural dairy where local ewe and cow milk is daily processed to produce traditional stretched curd cheeses. Later, we will visit Geraci Siculo, nested at about 1100 metres above the sea level, and walk to the ruins of the mighty medieval castle that was the stronghold of the feudal aristocratic family of Ventimiglia in the 14th century. Here, we will have the opportunity to talk about Sicilian history, explore the medieval town with its fascinating streets and churches, and breathe the fresh mountain air.

Later, driving down a beautiful mountain road, we will reach the territory of Pollina, the core of the traditional production of manna. Lunch will be in an organic manna farm where you will experience the way of harvesting manna and the several culinary and pharmaceutical uses of this sap that is collected by cutting the trunk of local manna ashes in the late summer.

We will finish our day with a visit of Pollina and a coffee in the central square. Pollina is a very small medieval town where time stays still and where you will be able to enjoy some of the best views in the whole Sicily: the Madonie mountains, the Aeolian islands and the rock of Cefalu are all in one sight!
