Along the Tuna Routes. Vendicari, Marzamemi and Portopalo

Each year, schools of red tuna go back to the open sea after having spent the spawning period in the warmer waters of the south-eastern coasts of Sicily.

The Greeks fully understood the dynamics of this eternal rite of nature, and inaugurated a long, meaningful, and important tradition of tuna fishing in Sicily, as it is shown by the Hellenistic-Roman fish factories found in Vendicari and Portopalo.

Between the 16th and the 18h centuries, the south-eastern coast hosted monumental tuna fisheries surrounded by small villages, that were populated by tuna-fishers and their families.

On this expert-led private tour, we'll learn about the tuna fishing tradition in Sicily, by visiting the charming villages of Vendicari, Marzamemi and Portopalo, whose “back” tuna fisheries were regarded as the most flourishing in the island.
