Trekking to Monte Cofano, a solitary giant between the sky and the sea

The coastal area between Trapani and Palermo stands out for the steep cliffs of its majestic promontories, which plunge into crystal-clear waters, creating scenic backdrops of incomparable beauty. In this enchanting scenery between Mount Erice and the promontory of San Vito Lo Capo, you can admire Monte Cofano, a small corner of Sicily embellished throughout the year by the Mediterranean scrub, rich in endemic flora.

To better preserve this unspoiled area, Monte Cofano was designated as an Oriented Nature Reserve in 1997. Since then, it has attracted many curious travelers who love to walk through suggestive landscapes untouched by man.

Our private trekking tour begins from Baglio Cofano and follows the Scaletta trail, descending to the Tonnara di Cofano along a path with a drop of about 250 meters that offers breathtaking views of the Cofano Gulf. Arriving at the Tonnara di Cofano, one is amazed by the stellar plan of the tower called "Torre del Tono," built in the 16th century to defend the structures of the tuna fishery from Saracen incursions and help fishermen spot tuna near the coast. Continuing along the cliff overlooking the sea, you then reach the small eighteenth-century votive shrine of San Nicola and the nearby Chapel of the Crucifix. Pilgrimage destinations for Custonaci inhabitants, these places of worship help keep alive the religious culture of this beautiful area. Continuing the path, you arrive at the Tower of San Giovanni, built by the Spaniards in the 16th century to defend this corner of Sicily, and finally end up in the small village of Cornino.
