Our experience begins on the Temple Hill, the ancient sacred ridge of Akrágas, where monumental Greek sanctuaries have stood since the late 6th century BC. As we walk among the archaeological remains, we will explore the history of one of the most important Greek cities in Sicily, while taking in the extraordinary landscape surrounding the Valley of the Temples.
The visit will then continue through the Kolymbethra Garden, a lush historic garden nestled within the archaeological area. Today, the garden is a beautiful oasis of citrus and olive trees, traditionally irrigated through an ancient water system. In Greek times, according to the historian Diodorus Siculus, this same area was transformed into an impressive artificial lake, the Kolymbethra, rich in fish and vegetation. Its water was supplied by underground channels attributed to the Greek architect Phaeax, whose ingenious hydraulic system played an important role in the development of ancient Akrágas.
