ARTISTS OR ARTISANS? Discovering Sicilian Handicrafts...

In an era overpowered by technology, ancient handicraft traditions have existed and survived for generations in Palermo.

This fascinating private walking tour consists of visiting small handcraft ateliers (workshops) where the techniques have been handed down from fathers to sons.

With great patience and passion, Salvo, Salvatore and Benedetto craft, carve, sew and chisel their handcrafted objects inside their very private and secret workshops in Palermo's city centre

Salvo is known as "the Puppet Maker of Capo Market". His studio is located in a hidden part of the market. He learnt the art of making Sicilian puppets, which are very popular in Sicilian folklore, from his father. From a single block of wood, he is able to make the puppet body and from sheets of metal, he makes the armour, the shield, and the sword. He also uses glass for the eyes and makes his characters move and speak.

Salvatore makes his “coppola” according to an ancient tradition dating back to the 19th century. Thanks to artisans like him, who continue to handcraft “coppole”, these iconic hats have been a staple in Sicilian fashion for generations. With the finest materials and attention to detail, each “coppola” is a unique and timeless accessory.

And finally, Benedetto, a master silversmith who patiently and passionately shapes and restores sacred and secular art objects, including those of Catholic and Jewish origin. In his workshop, tucked into a small courtyard in the silversmiths’ quarter, he gathers works of art from churches and palaces across Europe to give them new life and return them to worshippers and fortunate owners. In doing so, he continually draws inspiration from the art that once made the workshops of this neighborhood famous, and that still echoes in his new creations
