The Prehistoric Necropolis of Castelluccio

The prehistoric settlement of Castelluccio, one of the most striking places around Noto, is 20 km far from the town. This place, overlooking the middle valley of the River Tellaro, gave its name to the most famous cultural facies of the Early Bronze Age in Sicily. The necropolis comprises almost 200 artificial rock-cut tombs, that were dug along the rock faces of Cava della Signora (The Lady’s Canyon) in the first half of the second millennium BC. Some of these tombs presented monumental façades with pilaster strips and pillars; some others were closed by door chiseled with symbolical spiral-shaped motifs. There is a current exhibition of these door slabs at the Archaeological Museum “Paolo Orsi”.
