The Villa Romana del Casale and Its Mosaics

Experience the world’s most extensive complex of Roman mosaics (3,500 square meters) with a private tour of the Roman Villa at Casale, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.

You will walk through this magnificent 4th-century AD Roman villa, which was built as the center of a vast latifundium, a large agricultural estate in the heart of Sicily. The villa includes approximately 48 rooms, richly decorated with some of the finest and best-preserved Roman mosaics in the world.

Together with our archaeological guides, you will explore the mosaics, whose iconography is related to contemporary North African mosaics and depicts different themes, including hunting scenes, chariot races, mythological themes, athletic scenes featuring young women, and frequent representations of cherubs.

The Villa remained in use throughout the Byzantine and early medieval periods and later became an agricultural and commercial center during the Arab-Norman period. Eventually, floods and landslides buried much of the complex, helping to protect the mosaics and preserve them for centuries.
