Valley of the Temples in Agrigento and Archaeological Site of Sant'Angelo Muxaro

We will see two of the most important archaeological sites of protohistoric and classic Sicily by going around myth and history, Sican and Greek ruins.

Our private day tour will begin with a walk along the rocky crest of the Temple Hill of Agrigento. A series of sanctuaries consecrated to the most important tutelary gods have decorated this crest since the late 6th century BC.

Then, we will travel around the inland of Agrigento to join the protohistoric necropolis of Sant’Angelo Muxaro, whose site has been often identified with the capital of the Sican realm of king Kolakos (namely, Camico). We will visit a group of monumental rocky tombs along the gypsum slopes of the hill in which the modern city rises. These tombs, which are very similar to the Mycenaean thóloi of the Peloponnese, hold an exceptional funeral heritage (10th-5th centuries BC) such as golden cups and rings, that are now exhibited at the Archaeological Museums of Siracusa and Agrigento, and at the British Museum in London.
