Medieval Palermo. Art and power at Steri and Palazzo Abatellis

.The controversial events and the political instability of the history of Sicily during the 13th and 14th centuries were the perfect scenery to foster the power and influence of some local aristocratic families such as the Chiaramontes and the Sclafanis. It is still possible to find the remains of their glorious past in the down-town of Palermo.

Our private walking tour of Medieval Palermo will start from the Steri (from Hosterium) or Chiaramonte Palace, which is a paradigmatic place of the history of this city. This fortified palace was Chiaramontes’ ancient mansion: it has witnessed its bloody history and, because of a twist of fate, it became the site of the Holy Inquisition.

Furthermore, we will also visit the magnificent Palazzo Abatellis, where you will admire the famous fresco “Triumph of Death” from Palazzo Sclafani and part of the most representative masterpieces of these medieval centuries.

The tour ends at the Church of San Francesco D’Assisi that is a good example of religious gothic architecture realized thanks to the efforts of the Chiaramontes, as signalled by the presence of their blazon on the amazing façade of the building.
