Sciacca is a historic town in south-western Sicily overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Nowadays, it can be considered a Museum of the Five Senses thanks to its long tradition of crafting. The town still preserves very beautiful treasures in stone, clay, leather, papier-mâché, gold, precious metals and, most important, the Sciacca Coral with its unique colours and origins...
Together we will walk along the streets while admiring religious buildings and noble palaces where ancient doors offer enticing glimpses of a different way of life. We will visit the elegant cathedral and the Diocesan Museum to learn about the local devotion to “Madonna del Soccorso” and peek into a small box containing all the jewels that the believers have donated to her over the centuries. All the votive offerings are decorated with coral, gems and small pearls. Every jewel tells its own story that strongly connects with the importance of coral and gold for the town of Sciacca.
We will then focus our attention on one of the most fascinating traditions of Sciacca: the art of engraving the prized coral. Inside the workshop of a local artisan you will uncover the story of the coral reefs and, after a lesson on its characteristics, you will experience the phases of coral cleaning and engraving.
On request: the experience can be extended with the opportunity for you to create a customized piece of jewelry as a keepsake of your visit to Sciacca.
